Once in Cape Town – Hostel Review

South Africa has changed our mindset towards hostels!

Before visiting, we thought that hostels were only for young backpackers. I used to stay in hostels in my early 20s. However, since getting married and having kids, it felt like our hostel days were behind us. Surprisingly, after visiting South Africa and staying in several hostels during our overland trip between Joburg and Cape Town, we heave learned that hostels are very family-friendly, very community-focused, very well-located, and very affordable

One of our favourite hostels in South Africa isĀ Once in Cape Town – an amazing accommodation in Gardens right in the heart of the city! We had a lot of good things about Once while we were on the Baz Bus so we were super excited to stay here. There was definitely reasons why people were raving about this hostel. Here’s why we loved Once in Cape Town:

Once in Cape Town

Right when we arrived and got a personalized guided tour of the entire hostel, we knew we had picked the right place to stay at. During our entire stay, the entire team were super friendly, playing with our kids, organizing our laundry cleaning, storing our luggage, helping us with sightseeing recommendations, and much more. Make sure you say “Hi!” to the GM Sean…he has the most awesome moustache ever!

Once again, “Once” differentiates itself from other hostels by offering guests clean, spotless rooms! We were even able to let #BabyRenzo crawl around our room. All the rooms offer en-suite washrooms so no need to share with other guests. Plus, one of my personal favourite features was the electric plug on the headboard of each bed for us to charge our electronic devices. Definitely keeps a blogger happy! šŸ˜‰

Yours Truly at Once in Cape Town
Wow! A personalized FREE breakfast for each guest! You get a Welcome Back with a Breakfast Slip that you check off with a Hot Drink, Cold Drink, Fresh Fruit, and Yogurt or Sandwich! Yes, each coffee is made with love! Our kids loved waking up, rushing downstairs, and then checking off their Breakfast Order each morning. Definitely beats toasting your own bread and spreading it with butter in the hostel kitchen!

The closer you are to the centre of town, the easier it is to get around and explore the city! Luckily, Once is located right in the heart of the sightseeing area. We even had an unobstructed view of Table Mountain from our floor! We were able to explore a lot of the local sights and it was a cheap Uber ride back to the hostel. Plus, they offer FREE activities each day – check out the Board right at Check In!

Once in Cape Town - Welcome Pack
This is affordable luxury…I guess that is why they call it a Flashpackers or Poshtel! If you are tired of the smelly, dirty hostel scene, book yourself a relaxing, comfortable dorm bed or even better a private room. You will save money since breakfast is included and they have a restaurant and a bar on site with cheap meals. They even have Family Rooms for parents with young children like ours!
