Affordable dental care?
It may seem like an oxymoron but to the committed staff at Strathcona Community Dental Clinic, they are making dental care available and affordable to hundreds of families in the Lower Mainland! A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Dental Clinic at 601 Keefer Street in Chinatown, inside the playground of the Strathcona Elementary School, and meet up with Stephen Leary, Executive Director of Strathcona Health Society, which runs the clinic and other outreaches in the Downtown Eastside.
Although based in Strathcona, the clinic welcomes low-income families from all across Vancouver to come and get dental work done at a reasonable price. The main requirements are families must have a child under 18 years old as the primary patient. Then parents or siblings over 18 can come too so the entire family can get treatment at the same clinic. It’s also open to seniors aged 65 and up. In addition to the clinic, the Health Society provides Kid’s Health Programs, Free Dental Screenings, Toothbrush Clubs, and more.
The Dental Clinic relies on private donors for daily operating costs, staffing, and equipment so I would recommend visiting the clinic to make a donation or donating online on their website. A visit to the clinic will leave you inspired and wanting to make a difference. My small contribution is to raise awareness of such an important need in our city. If you know any low income families that need affordable dental care, make sure you connect them with the Strathcona Community Dental Clinic:
